Get even closer to nature and with over 1,300 miles of way marked trails you can discover somewhere new every day. With walks along coastal and forest trails, through open moorland or in and around our towns, you’re sure to find a route to suit your ability and interests.

Perfect locations for a stroll include; Kirroughtree for peaceful forest walks; Glentrool for hills and lochs, and get back to nature with one of the many other walks in Galloway Forest Park.

Newton Stewart, designated the ‘Gateway to the Galloway Hills’, hosts an annual Walking Festival – 28 guided walks for varying abilities, from strenuous hill-walks to coastal strolls, over 7 days in May.

Woodland Walks

Cree Valley Community Woodlands Trust regenerates & manages a range of woods, from Loch Trool to Newton Stewart, where you can enjoy a wonderful variety of scenery and wildlife.

Balloch Woods, Creetown Walking trails through forest and oakwoods, with wildlife ponds, starting from the village of Creetown, 6 miles away.

The Southern Upland Way

Take on the challenge of southern Scotland’s coast-to-coast footpath, from Portpatrick in the west to Cockburnspath in the east – which is 212 miles long. You can sample shorter sections of the route as it passes through the magnificent countryside to the north of Newton Stewart. Southern Upland Way
